How to Pick a Good Testosterone Booster

Since testosterone boosters are such a broad and vague class of sports supplements, it can be extremely difficult to know which ones are worth your money and which ones are garbage.

Here are a few questions to keep in mind when shopping for your next testosterone booster:

Ingredients

Does the manufacturer include ingredients that have been proven to work, such as zinc, vitamin D, and tribulus terrestris?

Head to the “List of Testosterone Boosting Ingredients to Look For” section of this guide to see which ingredients you should specifically be looking for!

Dosage

Are all of the ingredients in the product adequately dosed? For example, if you see that D-Aspartic Acid (a very popular testosterone booster ingredient) is listed on the Supplement Facts panel, you want the dosage to be in the range of 2,000mg-3,000mg in order to see best results.

Our “Recommended Dosages” section will tell you specifically what to look for when it comes to the most prevalent and effective ingredients found in the highest quality testosterone boosters.

Value

What’s the price point compared to other testosterone boosters with similar ingredient formulations? Make sure the prices aren’t too far off from one another. Prices vary between manufacturers, but remember, they must remain in the same ballpark in order to remain competitive with one another.

Quantity

Does the product packaging include enough of the supplement so that you can take it for as long as you intend to without running out? Check to see if the manufacturer offers any sort of special deals for ordering multiple containers of the product.

Product Form

  • What form does the product come in? Capsules? Tablets?
  • How many do you have to take per serving, per day?
  • Are you willing to take the amount recommended by the manufacturer? Or is it an absurd amount according to your standards and lifestyle?

User Feedback

How do recent purchasers of the product like it? Check popular review websites such as Google, Bodybuilding.com, TrustPilot, and Better Business Bureau in order to get a better understanding of what others like and don’t like about the product

Brand Reputation

There are hundreds of testosterone supplements out there in every shape, form, and color. But it’s important to know what you’re actually putting into your body. What about the brand behind the supplement? Is it well-known and trusted? Or did it seem to crop up overnight and gain a sudden influx of five-star reviews? If you’re not sure, ask around and do thorough research before buying.

What Ingredients To Look for in a Testosterone Booster

While there are many different ingredients used in testosterone booster supplements, there are several key ingredients to keep an eye out for. The ingredients that are about to be presented to you are listed here due to the fact that they contain the most solid evidence behind their effectiveness.

The list is as follows:

D-Aspartic Acid

D-Aspartic Acid works to increase testosterone by causing the release of potent hormones such as luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and growth hormone [3]. These hormones are all involved in the cascade of hormones responsible for the creation of testosterone, which begins in the hypothalamus of the brain with these three key hormones. This eventually causes the accumulation of testosterone in the testicles of men, which, in turn, causes an increase in testosterone when supplemented with on a consistent basis.

Tribulus Terrestris

There is some controversy amongst researchers regarding how tribulus terrestris works in the body exactly. But what they do know is that it doesn’t appear to increase testosterone per se (or at least at a significant enough level anyway), but it works to increase libido and sexuality by increasing the amount and density of androgen receptors in the brain [8], which is what testosterone binds to.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek is commonly known for its libido-enhancing properties. But more recently, this ingredient has been postulated to increase testosterone. The primary compounds in fenugreek (called furostanolic saponins) are what is most often deemed as responsible for a potential increase in testosterone [22]. However, researchers have not been able to determine the possible mechanism in human studies.

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha technically hasn’t been proven to increase testosterone directly, but it has the potential to increase it via an indirect mechanism; cortisol reduction [2].

Cortisol is commonly known as the “stress hormone”, and for good reason. Cortisol is a catabolic hormone, meaning that its job is to breakdown cells in the body in order to be converted to energy. However, this can be detrimental to fitness goals such as muscle-building, which is one of testosterone’s primary jobs.

Ashwagandha inhibits a significant amount of cortisol production from occurring, thus, allowing testosterone to do its job more efficiently.

Zinc

Zinc deficiency can cause low testosterone, so it is vital that people consume enough zinc every day in order to avoid this. The potential mechanism as to why having low levels of zinc causes low testosterone is not exactly known. But researchers speculate that it could be that zinc affects the Leydig cells [12], which are responsible for the creation of testosterone within the testicles.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is actually a form of prohormone; meaning that it acts as the step that is necessary before the creation of testosterone. Vitamin D deficiency has been shown to cause a low testosterone condition in men [1], so it is vital that men get at least 2000 IU or more per day of Vitamin D.

Note: This is NOT to say that other ingredients that aren’t on this list do not work and will never work. They just have not been tested enough in a controlled experimental setting in order to be touted as “effective” or “ineffective”.

Recommended Dosages of Test Boosting Ingredients

Coming from the “List of Testosterone Boosting Ingredients to Look For” section of this guide, the recommended dosages for these effective testosterone-boosting ingredients are as follows:

  • D-Aspartic Acid
    • 2,000-3,000mg [17] per day appears to work best
  • Tribulus Terrestris
    • 1,875mg [18] per day
    • Can be split up into multiple servings per day if desired
  • Fenugreek
  • Ashwagandha
    • 5 grams [2] daily
  • Zinc
    • 3mg/kg [12] of body weight per day
  • Vitamin D
    • 3,000-5,000 IU [1] per day

Proposed Benefits of a Testosterone Booster

Many people think of testosterone boosters simply as a means to get more muscular. While this may be the motive for some, there are plenty of other reasons why people choose to take testosterone boosters.

The benefits that many people strive towards when taking this supplement include, but are not limited to:

  • Improved Libido
  • Increased Vitality (vigor, motivation, overall “manliness”)
  • Decreased Body Fat Accumulation
  • Improved Muscle Tone
  • Higher Sperm Count & Improved Sperm Quality/Motility
  • Decreased Levels of Anxiety

Forms of Test Boosters

As of the publication of this article, the form that the vast majority of testosterone boosters come in are capsules, but there are some that come in tablet form as well. Because of the large number of ingredients often used in testosterone boosters, this makes it much easier for manufacturers to fit all of the ingredients into manageable serving sizes.

Test boosters often come in what is called a formulation, which basically means that it is a combination of particular ingredients that the manufacturer believes to be the most effective and synergistic combination available for the purpose of increasing and optimizing testosterone. But you can also buy the ingredients separately; possibly even from the same manufacturer.

This may be the right move if you feel you’re severely lacking in a single ingredient (such as Vitamin D or Zinc)  but it would be too impractical to take more of the current formulation that you have, as that would simply be a waste of the other ingredients that you are not deficient in.

However, this may not be the right thing to do if all of the dosages in the formulation are optimal and you are not lacking in any particular ingredients, as you would be unnecessarily spending more money in the long run for no good reason.

Test Booster FAQ

These are some of the most commonly asked questions about testosterone boosters.

What is testosterone?

What is testosterone?

Testosterone is a steroid hormone in the body that is responsible for several key functions in males. Functions of testosterone that are of particular interest to those in the health/fitness realm are those of increased muscle mass and bone density, as well as being a key contributor in how fat is distributed throughout the body [23].

Although the effects of these functions are the most pronounced in men, they exist in women as well. If this didn’t happen to be the case, then women wouldn’t be able to build much muscle at all, if any.

What are the signs of low testosterone levels?

What are the signs of low testosterone levels?

There are several signs to be on the lookout for when dealing with low testosterone levels [24], and none of them are pleasant. These include:

  • Poor mood
  • Low energy
  • No motivation
  • Easier time gaining fat
  • Harder time building muscle
Can I raise my testosterone levels naturally?

Can I raise my testosterone levels naturally?

This question is a lot more complex than people realize. This is because it is dependent upon the fact of where a person’s testosterone lies in the first place.

To obtain a better grasp on this concept, we have to know the average testosterone level of a man; which can lie anywhere between 300-900 ng/dL [25] (nanograms per deciliter). With this information, we can better determine what influence the ingredients in various test boosters will have on our testosterone readings.

An example of this is an ingredient commonly found in testosterone boosters; D-Aspartic Acid. This amino acid has been found to increase testosterone levels in two conditions [17]; one in those who are infertile and temporarily in healthy young men. It has shown increases of 30-60% in infertile men, but have illustrated negligible increases in healthy young men.

So as you can see, much of it is dependent upon where the persons’ baseline testosterone level is before supplementation. This goes for any “test-booster”, not just D-Aspartic Acid.

What foods can raise testosterone levels?

What foods can raise testosterone levels?

It has been demonstrated in the scientific literature [1] that Vitamin D and Zinc are key components of increasing testosterone via food consumption. Examples of these foods include tuna, egg yolks, beef, beans, as well as fortified foods like milk and cereal.

What are testosterone boosters?

What are testosterone boosters?

A testosterone booster can be defined as a supplement that aids your body in the production of testosterone; either directly or indirectly. In other words, it can help your body in the synthesis of testosterone or it initiates other processes in the body that are responsible for the cascade of events that causes the creation of testosterone to occur.

Are test boosters natural?

Are test boosters natural?

In order to be legally sold online and in supplement stores, they must be natural. If a testosterone booster contains any sort of illicit substances such as anabolic steroids, then it would not be considered natural and it would also be illegal.

Do testosterone boosters work?

Do testosterone boosters work?

The answer to this question is dependent upon what ingredients the manufacturer chooses to include in the formulation of the testosterone booster. Whether it works or not is also dependent upon the research we have available (if any) and what the general consensus surrounding it is up to this point.

A great example of this is demonstrated in our D-Aspartic Acid example from a previous FAQ. As shown in the study mentioned earlier [17], D-Aspartic Acid has been shown to work (in a dose of 3 grams anyway), whereas Fenugreek (another popular ingredient used in testosterone boosters) has not shown to have any significant impact on a persons’ testosterone levels in healthy men [22].

How do test boosters work?

How do test boosters work?

This isn’t possible to answer in a single question and this is because of the fact that all of the different ingredients in a testosterone booster work in different ways (or if you want to be technical, you could say they all have different mechanisms).

For example, Vitamin D works as a prohormone; meaning that it essentially “tells” the body to produce more testosterone through its normal means, while something like Tribulus Terrestris contains a mechanism that is still unfamiliar to us to this very day, despite all of the ongoing research on it [18].

How long does it take for test boosters to work?

How long does it take for test boosters to work?

Again, this is completely dependent upon what ingredients are included in the testosterone booster. And even then, it’s difficult to say with absolute certainty how long an ingredient should be taken in order to witness optimal results. Most studies regarding sports supplementation are anywhere from 4-16 weeks usually, with 12-16 week part of that range being quite a stretch.

A general consensus to abide by here is if after 6-8 weeks, you don’t see any sort of difference in strength, body composition, or total testosterone level, then drop the testosterone booster and try something else.

Are testosterone boosters legal?

Are testosterone boosters legal?

Referring back to our question regarding if the testosterone booster is “natural” or not, it would be illegal for testosterone boosters to be unnatural. In the context of testosterone boosters, this would mean that a non-herbal ingredient or performance-enhancing drug was used in the product, such as anabolic steroids or illicit protein peptides like Human Growth Hormone (HGH).

Are testosterone boosters a steroid?

Are testosterone boosters a steroid?

As addressed in previous questions, the short answer is no, they are not steroids. If they were, they would be considered illegal and would be immediately taken off of the market.

Are testosterone boosters banned in sports?

Are testosterone boosters banned in sports?

Generally, they are not. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is primarily responsible for testing athletes for the illicit use of performance-enhancing substances, but they do not include testosterone boosters or any of the common ingredients found within them on their Prohibited Substances List [26].

Who can benefit from taking a testosterone booster?

Who can benefit from taking a testosterone booster?

Many people can benefit from taking a testosterone booster. Those who have a low testosterone condition (hypogonadism), low libido, or deficiencies in particular ingredients associated with testosterone such as Vitamin D, Zinc, and Magnesium would benefit the most from taking a testosterone booster.

Even women can benefit from taking testosterone boosters, believe it or not. In fact, the common testosterone booster ingredient tribulus terrestris has been to increase libido in postmenopausal women [27]! Pretty cool, huh?

Should I take a testosterone booster if I don’t work out?

Should I take a testosterone booster if I don’t work out?

You can take one, but you most likely won’t get the full benefits that a testosterone booster has to offer. A testosterone booster is a supplement, meaning that it’s supposed to supplement a primary activity, in this case, it happens to be exercising. Exercising on a consistent basis will do a whole lot more for you in terms of benefiting your testosterone than a supplement ever will. However, when you combine both together, you have just created a recipe for a higher quality of life as well as more optimal performance.

Will a testosterone booster increase my libido?

Will a testosterone booster increase my libido?

Some ingredients commonly found in testosterone boosters have not shown to have any effect on libido, while others have.

Examples of ingredients that have been shown to increase libido include tribulus terrestris [27] and fenugreek [22]. Interestingly enough, fenugreek appears to accomplish this in a completely psychological manner, as it has little to no effect on testosterone levels themselves.

Will a testosterone booster increase my sperm count?

Can a test booster make me stronger?

Can a test booster make me stronger?

Some of the ingredients in testosterone boosters may increase your strength. However, this would likely happen over a long period of time. We’re talking months here, not days or weeks. This may be discouraging to some, but it’s the truth. And because studies regarding testosterone boosters are often short in duration [30] it’s difficult to tell for sure whether the strength gains witnessed would continue (if there were any observed at all) or if they were directly from the testosterone booster itself.

As long as you are exercising properly and supplementing with the testosterone booster consistently, then you’ll most likely see gains in strength.

What can make a testosterone booster less effective?

What can make a testosterone booster less effective?

As of the publication of this article, we have no data on what can interact with the ingredients commonly found in testosterone boosters. As each manufacturer includes different dosages of a wide variety of ingredients, it makes it even more difficult to tell if there is an interaction between ingredients occurring.

Fortunately, even if this were to be the case, the observed interaction between any of the ingredients would most likely be very insignificant. This is because herbal remedies aren’t nearly as potent in the body as drugs are.

The only ingredient that we have data on that can cause an interaction is ashwagandha [31]. This herbal ingredient is known to interact with benzodiazepines (a class of anti-anxiety drugs) such as Xanax™ and Valium™. So consult your doctor first before taking a testosterone booster with ashwagandha if you are currently being prescribed benzodiazepines.

Can I just take individual test boosting ingredients instead of a testosterone booster?

Can I just take individual test boosting ingredients instead of a testosterone booster?

You certainly can. Depending on which ingredient you choose and what your purpose is for taking a testosterone booster in the first place, that single ingredient may be the only one you really need.

However, in most cases, you’ll most likely be losing out on the full benefit of having a broad spectrum of ingredients that work in synergy with one another. The ingredients chosen in a testosterone booster are often put in there together for a particular reason; which is usually to enhance the effects of these ingredients. As long as they are present in the proper dosages as proven in the scientific literature, then you should most likely (with a few exceptions of course) take the full testosterone booster product rather than the ingredient in its isolated state.

How do I take a testosterone booster?

How do I take a testosterone booster?

Simply follow the manufacturers’ directions for the best results. Most testosterone boosters have you take them daily, usually coming in an encapsulated form. Taking it every day is vital to having as close to stable levels of the ingredients as possible. This ensures that the ingredients work to their maximum effectiveness.

When is the best time to take a testosterone booster?

When is the best time to take a testosterone booster?

As long as you take the testosterone booster daily, it often doesn’t matter what time of day you take it, as the ingredients aren’t often timing-dependent. Most people take it either in the morning right after waking or immediately prior to their workouts. This often makes it easier for people to remember to take it.

How often should I take a testosterone booster?

Most manufacturers recommend that you take the formulation daily in order to get the best results.

For how long should I take a testosterone booster?

For how long should I take a testosterone booster?

Although there is no “hard-and-fast” rule to how long you should take it, a good rule of thumb to abide by is using it for 6-8 weeks, or simply until you run out of the supplement. Observe the results you obtained and then decide whether this supplement is right for you (or whether you should switch to a different testosterone booster formulation entirely).

Should I take a break from a testosterone booster?

Should I take a break from a testosterone booster?

Unfortunately, we have no concrete evidence as to whether or not it’s necessary to cycle on and off testosterone boosters. Given its herbal and “natural” nature, it appears likely that it is safe to continually consume a testosterone booster as long as you don’t witness any ill effects.

However, it’s also important to note that anything that has the potential to affect your hormonal profile should most likely be cycled. This is more of a “just in case” instead of a solid evidence-based claim. Better safe than sorry. Also, you’ll most likely see better results from taking a break and you’ll also save some money in the process.

Are testosterone boosters safe to take?

Are testosterone boosters safe to take?

Since these are herbal remedies, testosterone boosters are most likely safe to take for most healthy individuals. However, everybody reacts differently to various substances, whether or not they are drugs, herbs, or even food, it doesn’t matter.

An example of this occurring with a testosterone booster occurred in 2018 with Universal Nutrition’s Animal Stak. In the case report [32], the man complained of abdominal pain. This occurred as a result of the supplement causing his liver values to rise, meaning that the supplement caused excess strain to his liver. In the context of the case report, it seems like this is a very rare occurrence. But even still, it’s something to keep in mind.

What are the side effects of a testosterone booster?

What are the side effects of a testosterone booster?

We don’t have enough data to know for certain what side effects (if any) occur with the use of a testosterone booster supplement. Even if there are any, they are most likely negligible. However, if you feel like you’re experiencing any ill effects as a result of the use of a testosterone booster product, immediately stop using it and consult your physician.

Do testosterone booster cause damage to the kidneys and liver or any other organ?

Do testosterone booster cause damage to the kidneys and liver or any other organ?

Most likely not, but this class of supplements simply hasn’t been around long enough to know for certain. It is possible to have extreme cases such as in the example of the man in the case report mentioned previously [32], so it is always best to consult your physician before beginning any supplementation regime.

Do testosterone booster cause acne?

Do testosterone booster cause hair loss (alopecia)?

Do testosterone booster cause hair loss (alopecia)?

No, this cannot occur since androgenic alopecia is caused by excess DHT (dihydrotestosterone) in the scalp, which testosterone must be converted to in order to exert its effects. Herbal testosterone booster formulations are not nearly potent enough to cause enough conversion to DHT. Therefore, consider your hairline to be safe when taking a testosterone booster.

Will testosterone boosters cause testicle shrinkage?

Will testosterone boosters cause testicle shrinkage?

No, absolutely not. Remember, testosterone boosters are not anabolic steroids! Testicle shrinkage (known medically as “testicular atrophy”) is caused by a shutdown of testosterone production, which stems from the hypothalamus in the brain.

Since these are herbal remedies, they won’t cause nearly as potent of a response and certainly not a shut down of a person’s own natural testosterone production. In fact, testosterone boosters were made to complement one’s one natural testosterone production; not completely replace it.

Can I take a testosterone booster with other supplements?

Can I take a testosterone booster with other supplements?

As stated in a previous question, with the exception of ashwagandha, there is no solid evidence of interactions between those commonly found in testosterone boosters and other supplements.

What are the best supplements to take a testosterone booster with?

What are the best supplements to take a testosterone booster with?

It would be best to pair a testosterone booster with ingredients that compliment the purpose you’re taking the testosterone booster for.

Let’s say that you’re trying to increase your strength. In this scenario, you could pair your testosterone booster with a well-researched such as creatine. Creatine has been shown to significantly increase strength [33], so using a testosterone booster alongside it may further improve your results!

Should I take a testosterone booster when I’m trying to Lose Weight?

Should I take a testosterone booster when I’m trying to Lose Weight?

Yes, why wouldn’t you? It doesn’t matter whether you’re trying to bulk up or cut down, a testosterone booster will help you to build, or at the very least maintain muscle mass. In a best-case scenario, you’ll be able to both cut fat and build muscle simultaneously.

Plus, having an increased amount of muscle on your frame increases your metabolic rate [34], helping you burn more calories, even at rest!

Will I Lose Weight or Muscle Mass If I stop using a testosterone booster?

Will I Lose Weight or Muscle Mass If I stop using a testosterone booster?

That is very unlikely. Since these aren’t anabolic steroids, they won’t stop your natural production of testosterone. So you won’t get any negative dips in strength, body composition, or any other marker of progress.

Again, testosterone boosters were made to supplement your hard work, not replace it. The work that you put in is responsible for most of the progress that you witness. The testosterone booster simply gives you that extra push.

Wrapping Up

In summary, remember to make sure that when you’re shopping for a testosterone booster, it fits your specific needs. In other words, does it cover any deficiencies you believe/know that you have, such as a VItamin D or Zinc deficiency? Do you think you would benefit from ingredients that aren’t directly linked to testosterone production, such as Ashwagandha for anxiety?

The great thing about testosterone boosters is that they’re not just for increasing your testosterone levels; they’re also for improving your overall quality of life both inside and outside of the gym. Think of them more as “lifestyle supplements”.

All in all, testosterone boosters are a safe and relatively affordable way to accelerate your progress to the next level. But remember, this is given that all of the other pillars of your training are in place, such as a solid training and nutrition regimen. Once those are all set, then adding a high-quality testosterone booster to the mix can skyrocket your results even further!
